Prof. A. Ramachandran is the Chairman of Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospitals and President of India Diabetes Research Foundation (IDRF).

He has contributed extensively to diabetes care and epidemiological research in India for more than three decades.

He qualified in Medicine at JIPMER, Pondicherry, India. His post-graduate medical qualifications include MD – General Medicine Madras Medical College, Chennai, Post Doctoral Fellowship in Diabetes Endocrinology & Metabolism, University of Nebraska Medical Centre, USA. Ph.D. University of Madras, D.Sc. Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, London, and Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh.

IDRF has been established by Dr. A. Ramachandran based on his extensive experience as a scientist and researcher in the field of diabetology. He has published more than 300 research papers to date.

The Indian Diabetes Prevention Programme conducted by him has contributed significantly to the understanding of the preventive methodologies specifically effective in the Indian population. Series of urban and rural epidemiological studies taken up by Dr. A. Ramachandran and his team has resulted in a wealth of knowledge on various aspects, the pathogenesis, risk factors, and temporal changes in the prevalence of diabetes, pre-diabetes, and cardiovascular risk factors in India.

He is the recipient of the best investigator award by the World India Diabetes Foundation (WIDF) based in the US (2011). He was given the Lifetime Achievement Award for his research into diabetes prevention in India by the South Asian Health Foundation (SAHF), UK (2011). He has conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding contribution in the field of diabetes by the TamilNadu Dr. MGR Medical University at its 23rd convocation ceremony, in February 2012. He has received the best investigator award by World India Diabetes
Foundation (WIDF) based in the US, the Thomson Reuters Research Excellence Citation India Award in 2015 in medicine, the prestigious Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI) Healthcare Access Award 2017 for the highest level of contribution in the field of Diabetes Healthcare and the Menarini Award from World community for prevention of diabetes (WCPD), 2018 in Edinburgh, UK.

In 2011 he has been appointed as a visiting professor in the division of diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism, department of medicine, Imperial College, London, UK. He is the Regional Editor of Diabetic Medicine Journal (UK) for the Indian subcontinent, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East and serves on the Editorial Board for Diabetes Care, Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice, British Journal of Diabetes and Vascular Disease and Practical Diabetes International. He is a current member of
Editorial board of Journal of Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice.
